Our Mission

At Petina, we believe there’s a better way. It all started with a simple but striking moment: seeing a park bin overflowing with dog-waste bags. The smell was bad. The visual mess was worse. And it got us thinking: how many thousands, hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of plastic dog-waste bags are ending up in UK landfill sites, potentially taking millions of years to break down?
We knew we had to act. Our mission is to make truly compostable, high-quality dog-waste bags the norm, not the exception. To remove plastic from the equation. To shift the default from “just another plastic bag” to “the responsible choice”.

Why we make the change from plastic to compostable?

  • Plastic waste in the UK is huge. For example, around 5 million tonnes of plastic are used annually in the UK, with nearly half of that for packaging.
  • One source estimates nearly four million tonnes of plastic waste could go to landfill in the UK every year.
  • More specifically, in one UK local region study it was estimated over ten billion plastic bags were used each year in the UK — about 167 per person.
  • What does this mean for dog-waste bags? We don’t have a precise number for that niche, but when you consider the scale of general single-use plastic bag use, it becomes obvious that dog-waste bags form part of the problem.
  • With compostable alternatives now viable, we believe transformation is possible.

The visual and practical moment

We want to paint the picture clearly: imagine a park on a busy walk-route. A bin overflowing. Bags hanging out. Smell in the air. Plastic being buried or incinerated. It struck us: this isn’t just unpleasant — it’s emblematic of a larger system defaulting to plastic.
If we can change that one bin, then why not countless bins across the UK, all using compostable bags instead of plastic? That’s what our mission strives for.

The environmental logic

  • Plastic left in landfill may take hundreds to thousands of years to break down, and often doesn’t fully biodegrade in the meaningful sense.
  • When plastics are incinerated, they don’t simply vanish, they release carbon dioxide and toxic pollutants.
  • By using compostable materials, particularly certified ones, we can close the loop: waste returns to the soil rather than to the long-term landfill or toxic-emissions system.

How Petina are different

  • Compostable certified bags

We don’t just market “eco”, we deliver compostability that is certified. Unlike some competitors who use a cornstarch-blend mixed with plastics (which may degrade slowly, require industrial conditions, or still leave microplastics).

  • Hand-packed in the UK

Quality matters. Each of our bags is hand-packed here in the UK, giving us direct oversight of manufacturing, packing, and supply-chain quality control. By keeping this in the UK, we reduce transport emissions and maintain high standards.

  • Affordable and accessible

All too often, “sustainable” or “green-credentialled” products carry a premium price. We maintain premium quality, whilst keeping our pricing affordable. We don’t believe price should be the barrier that makes plastic the default choice.

Join the Movement

We’re not just selling bags — we’re inviting a shift. A shift in mindset. A shift in practice. When you choose Petina, you’re choosing to say:

“We don’t accept plastic just because it’s familiar. We demand better.”

Let's make overflowing bins with plastic bags a relic of the past. Let's make the “park bin sight” of tomorrow one filled with compostable bags, minimal smell, minimal mess, no fossil-plastic burden. Together, we can turn a small habit (dog-waste bag) into a big step for our environment.

Thank you for being part of the mission.
